As part of the biggest transformation since the studios were founded in 1931 and a wider investment programme that also includes two new music recording studios, Abbey Road Studios is taking its world-famous movie score recording facility to the next level with the opening of a state-of-the-art mix stage with Dolby Atmos® Premier Studio Certification and IMAX audio compatibility. This landmark post production suite allows Abbey Road Studios to offer a service to film makers encompassing all elements of movie sound for the first time – scores, sound effects and dialogue.
The demands of film-making mean Abbey Road Studios need to cater for all creative possibilities, so the studio is augmenting its offering with mixing capabilities for Dolby Atmos® and IMAX sound systems. The introduction of the mix stage means Abbey Road Studios will be the only studio in London to offer the convenience of both movie scoring and sound post production in a single location.
Abbey Road Studios has been at the heart of some of the world’s most famous movie score recordings including Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Spectre (James Bond), Jason Bourne and Suicide Squad. Video game scores include Tomb Raider, Halo, Final Fantasy and Star Wars.
Isabel Garvey, Managing Director at Abbey Road Studios says, “As one of the few recording studios in the world that can easily accommodate a large orchestral recording set-up, Abbey Road Studios has become the premier destination for leading movie studios and award-winning movie score composers. The introduction of the new mix stage confirms our commitment to keep delivering the best-in-class facilities and studio talent from recording through to post production.”
Kobi Quist, Sound Mix Technician at Abbey Road Studios says, ”This new purpose-built post-production mix stage enabled us to create a facility with no compromises in terms of speaker placement and flexibility for client demands. Whether artists or engineers want to mix the audio virtually or natively, or a combination of both, we have taken into consideration the various ways clients work. Our mix stage is set up to ensure incredible mixes and leave a positive lasting impression.”
Equipped with a Dolby Atmos® Premier Studio Certified speaker arrangement, the 25 foot wide room features a 4K projector and a 20-foot screen for picture playback. Eight Pro-Tools music production systems are also in place.

What is Dolby Atmos®?
Dolby Atmos® is the next generation of surround sound technology adopted by cinemas and home entertainment products. It is designed to create a more lifelike 3D sound through the introduction of the ‘audio objects’ concept during the soundtrack mixing process and speakers positioned overhead for increased realism and immersion.
Unlike traditional surround sound technology where audio is restricted to specific channels, Dolby Atmos® allows artists to place and move a a maximum of 118 simultaneous audio object tracks alongside the 7.1.2 audio beds anywhere within the cinema’s three-dimensional space for playback through a multi-speaker set-up. This offers artists and film makers more creative freedom during the mix stage process.
